Possibility: High-Tech Solar Panel Roads

Possibility: High-Tech Solar Panel Roads

We’ve been familiar with solar power for decades. Without a doubt, its potential is huge, especially if you’re to use it to power every vehicle out there. Unfortunately, solar panels take up a lot of space to be set up and the truth is, our country won’t grow any bigger. To compensate for the lack of space, Solar Roadway from Idaho has a radical idea: use every asphalt-covered road out there as real-estate for these solar panels. This way, it can supply the country’s energy needs.

Though it may seem really radical and perhaps even ridiculous, the DOT has given the said company a 100,000 dollar contract in order to demonstrate this proposal. Basically, solar road panels are composed of three layers. The bottom later contains all the data and power lines so electrical power can be distributed properly. The middle layer contains the solar cells and LEDs. Last but not the least, the top layer is translucent so that the sun’s rays can pass through.

Right now, everything is still in its conceptual stage and it’ll take decades before a real solar road panel can be used. Fact is, there are thousands of roads in the US and if you transform each of them into a solar road panel, it can create havoc when it comes to traffic. Aside from that, it’ll take such a long time for all of these roads to be transformed.

Opel finally figured out how to challenge America’s Chevy Volt and that’s by introducing its new electric-petrol car: the Vauxhall Ampera

Offering sleek design and superb aerodynamics, Opel wanted to showcase the future of green vehicles with the Vauxhall Ampera. The superb thing about this vehicle is that it has engine, but there’s a catch. The catch is that you don’t use it all.

Since the Vauxhall Ampera is an electric vehicle as well, you can plug it overnight and you’re good to go on a 40-mile commute using only its batteries. Essentially, it’s an electric-pertrol vehicle hybrid rolled into one.

So what happens when the batteries run out of charge? Simple. The engine comes into play automatically and does the job of turning the wheels.

Pegged at around 40,000 USD, the Vauxhall Ampera will be available by 2011.

MyCar Electric Car

MyCar Electric Car

A pocket-sized sports car. That’s how to describe the MyCar Electric Car when I first saw it a few weeks ago. Fact is, the MyCar is far from being a sports car because just like most vehicles running on electricity, it can only muster 40mph.

Using lead-acid batteries that can store 9.6 KWH of power, you can easily charge them in just under five hours. After that, you can cover as much as 60 miles driving this sporty looking electric car.

Fact is, the MyCar is all about giving you excellent inner-city transport, no more and no less. At almost 10,000 Euros, it’s pretty expensive for a car that looks like a toy. Then again, any environment-conscious individual would slobber at the thought of not using a single drop of fuel to drive it.
