Opel finally figured out how to challenge America’s Chevy Volt and that’s by introducing its new electric-petrol car: the Vauxhall Ampera

Offering sleek design and superb aerodynamics, Opel wanted to showcase the future of green vehicles with the Vauxhall Ampera. The superb thing about this vehicle is that it has engine, but there’s a catch. The catch is that you don’t use it all.

Since the Vauxhall Ampera is an electric vehicle as well, you can plug it overnight and you’re good to go on a 40-mile commute using only its batteries. Essentially, it’s an electric-pertrol vehicle hybrid rolled into one.

So what happens when the batteries run out of charge? Simple. The engine comes into play automatically and does the job of turning the wheels.

Pegged at around 40,000 USD, the Vauxhall Ampera will be available by 2011.
